Ghana Info & Terms

Ghana Info
Location - In the "armpit of West Africa"
Population - We've just been included in the latest census and the estimated number is 23 million
Capital - Accra, that's where we are
Currency - Ghana Cedi (worth about 70 US cents), introduced in 2007 but people still use old currency and quote you 100,000 cedis instead of 10 Ghana cedis.

Ghana Terms
Tro tro - bus but really it's a van
Obruni - white person
Dash - bribe, gift, tip
Aunty - older female used when first name terms are not appropriate
Big-man - Rich and well connected man in position of authority.
Bottom Power: Sleeping one´s way to success.
Bourgur: (prononced BO-GA) Ghanaian living Abroad. This word originated from the word Hamburger, i.e. a resident of the German city Hamburg.
Chaley - Friend. Originates from "Charlie" used by American Military for radio transmissions during WWII.
Chaleywotey -Rubber slippers. "Wote" in the Ga language means "let's go."
